Goddard’s Climate and Radiation Research Environment: Way Forward

Speaker is a candidate for the 613 Lab Chief position

NASA’s rich Earth Science Missions, Programs and scientific expertise have contributed tremendously toward the rapid advancement of climate research, especially during the last couple of decades. Goddard’s Climate and Radiation Laboratory is endowed with world-class leaders in the radiation sciences, remote sensing, modeling, and overall atmospheric and climate research. However, the current unfavorable national budget situation is threatening to cause severe delays or even cancellation of some important missions that were recommended for Earth Science under the 2007 NRC Decadal Survey, with the risk of creating gaps in knowledge and climate data records, and the potential of limiting our effectiveness at conducting critical research and generating essential discoveries that can help propel climate research toward the attainment of a comprehensive understanding. In this presentation, we will explore creative ways of leveraging our wealth of expertise, knowledge, and experience to forge a new paradigm of collective vision to fill the gaps, collaborate, integrate, communicate, and educate, in order to continue to make powerful and sustainable positive impacts in the global climate research arena as individuals, expert teams, and collectively as a Laboratory.
