GSFC Laboratory for Atmospheres, Code 613
On Tuesday, March 4, the Aerocenter group held its annual Aerosol Update. Aerocenter is the Center for Aerosol Research at GSFC, a cross-cutting, interdisciplinary group of researchers from within the Earth Sciences Division and the broader scientific community. Aerosols are chemical particulates and droplets in Earth's atmosphere. They play an important role in Earth's climate system by scattering and absorbing radiation--the direct effect--as well as by modifying the properties of clouds--the indirect effect. Currently, Aerocenter has about 170 participants who work in various aspects of satellite remote sensing, ground-based and airborne remote sensing and in situ measurements, and modeling studies focused on sharpening our understanding of the properties of aerosols and their role in the climate system. About 100 people attended Tuesday's update, including representatives from GSFC management, NASA headquarters, and the scientific community. Presentations were made by Pete Colarco (Code 613.3), Ralph Kahn (Code 613.2), William Lau (Chief, Laboratory for Atmospheres, Code 613.0), Dorothy Koch (GISS/Columbia University), Mian Chin (Code 613.3), Robert Levy (Code 613.2), and Mark Schoeberl (Code 610.0).
