CODE 613 LABORATORY FOR ATMOSPHERES

Meetings, Workshops

Bojan Bojkov (613.3/UMBC) organized the Validation workshop for CO2 in Pasadena CA May 13-14. This workshop involved about 20 participants from Japan (JAXA, NIES), Europe (U. Bremen, U. Florence, ESA), and the US (JPL, GSFC, U. MD). CO2 observation capabilities from space will be greatly extended with the upcoming launches of the US OCO (December 2008) and of the Japanese GOSAT (early 2009) missions, both having a prescribed measurement accuracy of <1%. The validation of these measurements from space relies on the existing ground-based in situ networks (NOAA), comparisons with selected FTIR sites (TCCON, NDACC), a limited number of commercial aircraft measurement programs (CARIBIC) and existing satellite measurements (Sciamachy). The objectives of this workshop are to facilitate dialogue and coordination among the satellite teams, and between the satellite teams and the correlative data providers, on the validation of CO2 measurements from space.

Education and Outreach

A Space Act Agreement between NASA/GSFC and Howard University has recently been completed. The intent of the agreement is to formalize the on-going relationship between NASA/GSFC's Laboratory for Atmospheres and the Howard University Research Campus in Beltsville, MD. The goals of the agreement are to foster joint research and student training both at the Beltsville Research Campus and in Code 610 laboratory space. The technical points of contact on the agreement are David Whiteman (613.1) and Gregory Jenkins/Chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy.

David Whiteman (613.1) participated in commencement exercises at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on May 21. Dr. Whiteman was the research advisor for Felicita Russo who received her PhD degree in Atmospheric Physics for research into techniques for studying the aerosol indirect effect using Raman lidar. Dr. Whiteman jointly hooded Ms. Russo with Dr. Ray Hoff, her faculty sponsor at UMBC.

Mission Related Activities

David Starr (613.1) presented draft plan for NPP-VIIRS Aerosol and Cloud Environmental Data Record (EDR) Validation to pre-MOR peer review on May 22. Starr recently became Integrated Program Office (IPO) Lead Scientist for this activity, responsible for developing validation activities of an IPO team and coordinating with NASA NPP Science Team and contractor (NGST) team. NPP Validation activities will heavily leverage experience and lessons learned in the EOS program and various NASA and community observing assets.
