ARCTAS Field Experiment
The final phase of the ARCTAS (Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites) took place from June 27 to July 12 in Canada. The goal of this deployment is to characterize smoke emissions from boreal forest biomass burning. Two aircraft, the NASA DC8 and the P3B are based in Cold Lake, Alberta. A third aircraft, the NASA B200 is based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Ralph Kahn (613.2), Allen Chu (613.2/UMBC), Charles Ichoku (613.2/UMCP) and Lorraine Remer (613.2) participated either as members of the forecasting team or as part of the P3B science team. Fires near Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan were seen from the NASA P3 aircraft on June 29, 2008. The same fires were identified by the Terra MODIS instrument the following day on June 30 (following Figure).

The Arctic is undergoing significant environmental changes related to global climate change. NASA is extensively studying the role of air pollution in this climate-sensitive region as part of the ARCTAS field campaign, the largest airborne experiment ever to do so.

Seminars and Workshops
Climate & Radiation Branch Special Seminar Wednesday, July 2, 2008 Hiroko Miyahara, Dept. of Earth & Planetary Sciences, University of Tokyo, "Transition of the eleven-year solar cycle during the last 1200 years and its effect on climate"

Education and Outreach
Robert Cahalan (613.2), Steven Platnick (613.2) and Rob Simmon (613.2/SSAI) participated in the 2008 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall, July 2-6, 2008.
