GSFC Laboratory for Atmospheres, Code 613

Noteworthy science achievements/awards
George Huffman (613.1/SSAI) was announced as Co-Chair of the International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG) with Dr. Christian Klepp (Univ. of Hamburg, Germany). The IPWG is one of three working groups constituted by the World Meteorological Organization / Coordinating Group on Meteorological Satellites (WMO/CGMS). It provides advice and support regarding precipitation for coordination among the international agencies responsible for the operational meteorological satellite constellation.

Projects/missions
David Whiteman (613.1) presented a talk entitled “Satellite Validation and Related Activities at the Howard University Beltsville Campus (HUBC)” at the Joint NASA/NOAA Atmospheric Sounding Science Team Meeting held in Greenbelt, MD October 14 – 17. The NPP Cal/Val activities plan to make use of measurements from the developing GRUAN (GCOS Reference Upper Air Network) sites of which HUBC is an initial member. Dr. Whiteman's talk provided information about the HU plans for implementing GRUAN and the continuation of reference sounding and lidar measurements in coordination with satellite overpasses in accordance with goals specified in the CrIS/ATMS validation plan.

Proposals
A proposal submitted by David Whiteman (613.1) to the Steering Committee of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) has been accepted. The proposal concerns the use of the ALVICE Raman lidar system for water vapor validation activities within NDACC. Based on the acceptance of this proposal, ALVICE is now an official complementary measurement system within NDACC.

Eric Wilcox’s book “Clouds” was recently published in the UK and Australia. "Clouds" is a book for a general audience on the subject, including over 130 fully captioned photographs of a wide variety of clouds and cloud-related optical phenomena. The book also contains an illustrated technical glossary on clouds and weather, and includes a forward by Gavin Pretor-Pinney, the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society.
