Projects/missions
- Gerry Heymsfield (613.1) and Judd Welton (613.1) attended the ACE Science Working Group meeting in Oxnard, CA. The purpose was to define the Tier 2 Decadal Mission Survey ACE mission.
- The Omnibus Appropriations Act , 2009, signed by President Obama on March 11, contained the following language: “Landsat data continuity mission (LDCM).--Funding of $10,000,000 is provided to initiate development of a thermal infra-red sensor (TSIS). NASA is directed to identify the earliest and least expensive development approach and flight opportunity for TSIS.” The instrument acronym should have been “TIRS” for thermal infrared sensor. This guidance allows GSFC to continue its in-house development of a TIRS for LDCM.

- Mr. Ricardo Forno completed a 6-week stay at GSFC as a visiting researcher from the Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics at the Universidad Mayor de San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia. During his time at GSFC, he worked with David Whiteman (613.1) in cryogenic frostpoint measurements of atmospheric water vapor in support of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC).
- Gail Skofronick Jackson (613.1) presented "Global Precipitation Measurement(GPM) Mission and Falling Snow Retrievals" for the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) seminar series on March 11, 2009 in Camp Springs, MD.
- Paul Newman (613.3) gave a talk on the "World Avoid: What would have happened to ozone and UV if CFCs had not been regulated?" at the Environmental Protection Agency on Mar. 11 (Wednesday). The meeting was for the stakeholders in the "Don't Fry-Day" public outreach effort that will occur on May 22, 2009. This public outreach program is intended to promote the avoidance of excessive sun exposure at the beginning of summer.
