GSFC Laboratory for Atmospheres, Code 613
Noteworthy science achievements/awards
- A NASA Hq news release entitled “ NASA Experiments Stirs up Hope for Forecasting Deadliest Cyclones” was announced this week, highlighting the recently published paper in Geophys. Res. Lett. by Dr. Oreste Reale (Code 613.0 / UMBC) and his collaborators in demonstrating significant improvements in forecasting tropical storm Nargis, using assimilating AIRS cloudy-sky retrievals in the GEOS-5 forecasts. The paper represents the first successful attempt to “hindcast” tropical cyclone Nargis using a global, high-resolution forecast model.
Noteworthy personnel awards and staff changes
- 2009 NASA Honors Awards for the Laboratory for Atmospheres were announced:
- Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal – Anne Douglass (613.3) – Note: Only one Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal was awarded to GSFC this year
- Exceptional Service Medal – Matt McGill (613.1) and Jim Irons (613.0)
- Outstanding Leadership Medal – Dave Starr (613.1)
- Group Achievement Award – OMI Instrument Team (613.3)
