Noteworthy science achievements/awards
Noteworthy personnel awards and staff changes
- Dr. Thomas L. Bell (613.2) retired on May 1, 2009 from the Climate & Radiation Branch after more than 30 years of service to NASA. As an Emeritus Scientist, Dr. Bell will continue to study and assess data associated with satellite precipitation measurement, in particular those related to the TRMM and GPM satellite projects.
- Alexandre Correia (613.2/ORAU), who has been working with Lorraine Remer for the past two years through the NASA Postdoctoral Program, competed for and won a permanent faculty position in the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Correia will continue his work with the branch for the next 6 months.
Projects/missions
- Si-Chee Tsay (613.2), Christina Hsu (613.2), Richard Kleidman (613.2/SSAI) and Jun Wang (613.2 Visiting Scientist) are attending the Seven South East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) meeting in Singapore, May 6-8, 2009.
- Robert Cahalan (613.2) is attending the TSIS Mission Group Meeting, Boulder, Colorado, May 4-6, 2009.
- Eric Wilcox (613.2) is attending the AIRS Science Team Meeting, Pasadena, California, May 4-8, 2009.
Significant planned events
- Dr. K-C.Moon, vice president of the Korean Institute for science and technology (KIST) will be visiting GSFC on May 18, Monday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. He is interested in aerosol, and air pollution, particularly with regard to instrumentations. Dr. William Lau (613.0) plans to have a small gathering of experimentalists in the Laboratory for Atmospheres present brief 15 min presentations to him, and then have him tour one of our labs.

Highlights of inter-Directorate teaming
External interactions (HQ, universities, other Gov't organizations, etc.)
- Charles Ichoku (613.2), Robert Cahalan (613.2), and Charles Gatebe (613.2.GEST), who provide scientific support to the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program (http://www.globe.gov/r), are hosting the GLOBE Director, Dr. Edward E. Geary, and the GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign (SCRC) Coordinator, Dr. Donna J. Charlevoix, both of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), Boulder, Colorado. The visitors will meet with the Earth Sciences Director, Dr. Franco Einaudi, and several GSFC scientists to discuss areas of partnership for the successful planning and execution of the SCRC that will take place during 2011-2013. They will also present a Special Education and Public Outreach Colloquium on Thursday, May 7 at 10AM in room H114, entitled “Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)¹s Worldwide Student Climate Research Campaign (2011-2013): Inspiring and Preparing the Next Generation of Earth System Scientists”.
