Projects/missions
- A kick-off meeting for AIST Project CAMVis was held in the NASA ARC Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division from 11 to 12 May 2009. Participants include Bo-Wen Shen (PI, UMCP/ESSIC, 613.1), Wei-Kuo Tao (Co-PI, 613.1), Jiu-Lin Li (CO-I, JPL) and key members of three groups (visualization, application, and user services groups) at ARC/NAS, including Bryan Green (Co-PI), Chris Henze (Co-I), Piyush Mehrotra (Co-I), Catherine Schulbach, David A Ellsworth, Robert Hood, Samson Cheung, Tim Sandstrom, Johnny Chang, Sherry Chang, and Henry Jin. During the meeting, there were four oral presentations, more than six visualization demonstrations on the 128-panel hyper-wall, and several small group meetings. Project CAMVIs, which stands for "Coupling NASA Advanced Multi-scale Modeling and Concurrent Visualization Systems for Improving Predictions of High-Impact Tropical Weather", is a three-years AIST project supported and managed by ESTO (Earth Science Technology Office).
- Steven Platnick (613.2) and Ralph Kahn (613.2) attended the CLARREO Meeting in Hampton, Virginia May 13-15, 2009.
- Anne Douglass (613.3), Joanna Joiner (613.3), and P. K. Bhartia (613.0) participated in the Aura senior review at NASA HQ on May 13. Mark Schoeberl gave a 90 minute presentation to the review panel, responding to several questions that were raised during the review process.

- Global and Regional Aerosol Mapping: Analysis of Aerosol Air Mass Types, Their Evolution and Impacts by Ralph Kahn (PI/613.2) in response to ROSES A15. Atmospheric Composition: Modeling and Analysis.
- Aerosol Optical-Physical-Chemical Models from Remote Sensing and Spectral Absorption In Situ Measurements, Lorraine Remer (PI/613.2) in response to ROSES 2009 A15 ACMAP.
- Inferring Tropospheric Aerosol Composition from Satellite Observations and Radiative Transfer Modeling, Lorraine Remer (Co-I/613.2) in response to ROSES 2009 A15 ACMAP.
- Observing System Experiments to improve the impact of existing satellite observations in the NASA GEOS-5 system, and contribute to the design of future instruments, K.-M. Kim (Co-I/UMBC-GEST/613.2), Eric Wilcox (Co-I/613.2) in response to ROSES 2009 A15 ACMAP.

External interactions (HQ, universities, other Gov't organizations, etc.)
- David Whiteman (613.1) gave at talk at Trinity Washington University on April 21 as part of their Mathematics Awareness Week activities. His talk focused on the role of water vapor in the climate system and the use of mathemataical models to optimize systems to measure atmospheric water vapor.
- David Whiteman (613.1) participated in the Greenbelt Middle School career day on May 12 presenting to 4 classes at the school about typical work activities of an atmospheric scientist working at NASA.
- Dr. Santiago Gassó (UMBC-GEST/613.2) was invited by Dr. Didier Tanré to visit the Laboratoire d’Optique Atmosphérique (LOA) at the University of Lille in France. During the visit, Dr. Gassó gave a presentation on dust detection over the South Atlantic and met with the different aerosol and cloud groups at LOA.
- William Heaps (613.3) visited Northrup Grumman corporation in Los Angeles on May 8 to discuss possible collaboration on the broadband lidar technique currently under development at Goddard as a potential instrument for the ASCENDS mission. Northrup Grumman agreed to develop a broadband lidar operating in the vicinity of the carbon dioxide 2.0 micron absorption band and to loan it to Goddard for evaluation as a source for the lidar.

- Hongbin Yu (UMBC-GEST/613.2) presented a special seminar, “Satellite-Model Integrated Studies of Aerosol Long-Range Transport and Climate Impacts” on May 13, 2009.
- Alex Ruane, ORAU/NASA GISS will present a Climate & Radiation Branch Seminar, “The Effects of Precipitation Assimilation on the North American Regional Reanalysis Water Cycle” on May 20, 2009 at 3:30PM.
