Projects/missions
- The MPLNET project's newest site in Kanpur, India is now fully functional. Sebastian Stewart (SSAI/613.1) installed the lidar last month to acquire long-term climate observations, and to contribute to the TIGERZ/JAMEX experiment ongoing this spring. Initial calibrations have been completed and the site is now operational.

Proposals
Highlights of inter-Directorate teaming
External interactions (HQ, universities, other Gov't organizations, etc.)
- Scott Braun (613.1) participated in a proposal panel review for the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) on June 4, 2009. The topic of the announcement was "Improving tropical cyclone intensity forecasting".
- Bo-Wen Shen (UMCP/ESSIC and CICS, 613.1), who was recommended by the dean's office, serves as a member of high-performance computing (HPC) committee at UMCP. The HPC committee is chaired by Jeff Huskamp (VP and CIO of UMCP) and its primary goal is to define needs and determine implementation of campus support for HPC.
- Judd Welton (613.1) agreed to serve as a member of the advising committee for incoming student Virginia Sawyer, UMCP Dept. of Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences, Advisor: Zhanqing Li.
Accepted papers
- Book Chapter (Accepted): Yilmaz, K. K. (613.0/UMDCP), Vrugt, J.A., Gupta, H.V., Sorooshian, S. 2009: Model Calibration in Watershed Hydrology, In: Advances in Data based Approaches for Hydrologic Modeling and Forecasting, Eds: B. Sivakumar and R. Berndtsson, World Scientific

Noteworthy talks/presentations
- Bo-Wen Shen (UMCP/ESSIC and CICS, 613.1) will attend the EarthCARE Workshop 2009 in Kyoto, Japan, June 10-12, 2009. He will present research results on "Global Multiscale Modeling on NASA Supercomputers: Preliminary Extended-range Simulations of Madden-Julian Oscillations and African Easterly Waves" In addition, Bo-Wen Shen and Yukari Takayabu will chair the session of "model and cloud feedback" on June 11. http://www.prime-intl.co.jp/earthcare2009/program.html. EarthCARE is a joint European-Japanese mission addressing the need for a better understanding of the interactions between cloud, radiative and aerosol processes that play a role in climate regulation.
- Dr. George J. Huffman (SSAI; 613.1) participate in the GPM Hydrology Validation Microworkshop, 2-3 June 2009, Iowa City, IA, and presented Huffman, G.J., 2009: Heterogeneity-Related Issues in Multi-Satellite Products. GPM Hydrology Validation Microworkshop, 2-3 June 2009, Iowa City, IA. Importance: This short workshop was called to help flesh out the the validation plan for GPM hydrology activities.
- Eyal Amitai (613.1, Chapman University) gave a talk on "Rainfall Intensities of Extreme Precipitation Events" at the 2009 AGU Joint Assembly in Toronto (May 24-27) . He also convened the General Session on Precipitation.
- Eyal Amitai (613.1, Chapman University) participated at a special workshop on GPM hydrological validation at the University of Iowa, Iowa City on June 2-3.
